Description
Drylief is a water-soluble
cellulose derivative (a hydrophilic polymer) widely used in pharmaceutical
formulations. Its most common therapeutic use is as an ophthalmic lubricant
("artificial tears") for
the symptomatic relief of dry eye. It works by coating the surface of the eye
with a thin, viscous, tear-like film that helps retain moisture and reduce
friction between the eyelid and the eye surface.
Beyond
ophthalmic use, Drylief is also used pharmaceutically as an oral bulk-forming
laxative agent in some formulations, and very widely as a pharmaceutical
excipient (thickener, binder, suspending and stabilizing agent) in tablets,
oral liquids, and topical products, where it is not intended to have a therapeutic
effect of its own.
Therapeutic
Class

bulk-forming laxative (oral use) and a pharmaceutical excipient
